Street photography is one of the most popular photography styles that attracts people to the field. It’s also one of the hardest arts to master, not only because of the technical difficulties in finding interesting compositions and being able to handle the camera on the fly, but also because many people are intimidated by shooting photographs of strangers on the street. This is why small, compact lenses are ideal for this type of photography, in fact many street photographers use smaller more inconspicuous cameras as well so as not to bring attention to themselves in public, allowing them to shoot intimate moments they would otherwise have disturbed.

What are my favourite Nikon lenses for DSLR street, portrait and photography in general?  The 2 below, read the post to see the sample galleries and to find out why.

trans The Best Nikon Lens Combo for Street Photography

For a lot of my street photography work, I’ve been using the Nikon 20mm F2.8D and the Nikon 35mm F2D for a few months now and I’m delighted by their performance. The compact but robust builds are ideal for keeping a low profile, in fact, I always have friends asking why I’m using such an amateur lens! Little do they know that these lenses are among the best primes in Nikon’s line up.

A Great Combo of Ultra-Wide vs Mid-level

With an APS sensor, the 20mm translates to 30mm which is still quite wide, while the 35mm acts as a 50mm lens, which is perfect for portrait work. The Nikon 20mm allows one to move in close and get that ultra-wide angle street photography is known for, while the Nikon 35mm is just the right focal length for using bokeh to make subjects pop. Both are fast focusing and feel great on a camera. When used together, the combination is unbeatable.
